You know it, I write it

There are moments in life that stick with you forever. Some moments fly by before you can blink. Then there are moments where you can be clear, concise, and unambiguous. The Oxford Comma is the way!

Also called a serial comma, the Oxford comma crops up any time you are listing three or more things. Although this tiny piece of your literature may seem unimportant, it can be the difference between going with your ex, a clown and a bum, where you seem to be calling your ex both a clown and a bum, or going to a party with three people – your ex, a clown, and a bum.

Think it’s just not that serious? Lapsing with your comma use can cost you. In 2018, a dairy lost a $5M lawsuit surrounding exemptions from overtime. The lack of an Oxford comma made their list ambiguous. After this court case, Maine went back and added the Oxford comma into their labor laws to prevent future problems.

So the next time you are writing a list, please put one extra comma before “and”, to ensure you are being clear.
